A Special Message

Several years ago, a successful colleague and I were discussing the challenges of managing our professional and personal lives as we were both studying for the CFP® Certified Financial Planner™ exam; a 10-hour (at that time) exam.  We were both in our mid-forties and one of his business partners, a sixty-year-old chose not to pursue the designation stating, “I’m too old for this, I’ll be 65 in three years”.  My colleague remarked, “If you don’t pursue it, in three years, you’ll still be 65”.

Last week, Jay Smith, successfully completed the CFP® examination and, will be our newest Certified Financial Planner™ professional.  Most of our clients, the greater Lafayette community, and many across Indiana, know Jay Smith from his 30-year career with MBAH Insurance.  Jay ultimately became MBAH’s President.  A few years ago, he chose to take Emeritus status from MBAH and developed his “5-Star approach to Retirement Planning” in hopes of working directly with individuals as an Investment Advisor.  A few good events brought Jay to Gettings Reed.

After selling his interest in MBAH and contemplating an early retirement, Jay chose to continue teaching at Purdue University, he joined Gettings Reed because, in his words, “I want to help individuals articulate what is in their heart and head about retirement, so they can succeed”.  And, Jay chose to continue pursuing the CFP® certification.

We know Jay as the even keeled, level headed voice when discerning an important decision. We know him as one of Purdue University’s terrific Interim Lecturers, teaching the Retirement Planning course, a requirement to undergraduates majoring in Financial Planning in the Department of Consumer Sciences. We know him as an active Community member, involved in two Foundation Boards, guiding their Investment Committees.

Commitment, desire and persistence come to mind when I think of Jay Smith, three attributes we are so very proud he is sharing with Gettings Reed.  Congratulations Jay; stay young!!
